Do employees of rent to own places have the right to discuss your account openly (income and amount owed)?

Question by maine_squeeze65: Do employees of rent to own places have the right to discuss your account openly (income and amount owed)?
I was in the local RAC attempting to pay my bill. I was not able to make a full weeks payment. The store manger was handling the matter. He, feeling I needed financial “counseling” took it upon himself to review my account. He was very loud and vocal when discussing my payment history, income, amounts owed and paid. The store was full of people. He was verbally threatening. Do I have a right to privacy as with other debt collection? Do I have recourse?

Yes you have the right to privacy, this man was totally out of line and rude, you state he was the manager, Even managers have bosses, go over his head and make a formal complaint in writing to owner, cc it to the vp, the human resource director, depending on the size of the organization

I’m sorry this happened to you. I once worked in the HQ of a R2O place and heard a lot of horror stories from customers. I’m afraid that these places very often have a view of their customers as being low-lifes and they feel they have the right to treat them that way. Also, the store managers are under a lot of pressure from their bosses to keep the numbers right, and anytime someone gets behind with a payment, things get ugly, they lose bonuses, etc.

It would not hurt to call the head office and complain. Do what you can to sound calm and rational, and more classy than the jerk who talked to you. Be very sure about the name(s) of whoever you spoke to.

Then do the most powerful thing you can — tell EVERYBODY you know about what happened and soon word of mouth will spread and they will be taking their business to RAC’s competitors.

You do have a right to privacy. I would call thier coporate office and talk to them. I don’t know what you are renting, but I would try to pay it up ASAP and return it to them. Anyone who acts like that does not deserve your business.
