Used my credit card on ATM accidentally…?
Question by stripes: Used my credit card on ATM accidentally…?
I used my credit card in an ATM machine by mistake thinking it was my debit card. This transaction was done December of 2008 (according to the Chase representative) and I have never made the same mistake again. I realized today that I was getting a “Finance charge” on my statement and called them to find out what it was and that’s when I found out this horrible mistake. I asked the representative if there was a way I could get this off my credit and he said I would need to pay my card in full..$ 900.00 +. I’m a college student and currently unemployed. There is no way I can pay that amount right now.
Is there any way I can get this “cash advance” off my statement? I’ve only spoken to 1 representative. I was never late on my payments, always paid on time, I NEVER use cash advance, just that ONE mistake. Why is Chase being so harsh? There must be a way to remove this mistake from my statement. A mistake I just now found out about. Has this happened to anyone else and is there anything other than paying my full amount due to get this thing removed??
I AM PAYING THEM BACK RYAN M. Wtf is your problem? Relax. I was just asking if they could waiver this since it was a ONE TIME HONEST MISTAKE. WTF is wrong with me asking? I am a responsible adult, it’s not like I’m not making any payments.
By the way it was only 40 dollars!!!!
STEVEN F. I wasn’t aware of that. I never had any intentions of mistaking my credit for debit. It was only $ 40.00 and I do pay my credit card on time and everything I need to do is being done. I just wanted to make sure if there was anything else I could do since it was only 40 bucks!!!!!! (Plus a mistake on my part, I’m highly aware of that. I wanted to know if it would be easier for them to add 40 dollars to the bill I owe to the card).
My mistake wasn’t impossible. I had just opened my FIRST bank account, I was clueless. I never take money from ATMs, it was my first time doing so. I was 21 and naive.
And no , I think they both have the same PIN. number. Well, how could I know now since I know better than to make that stupid mistake again. Both cards look similar, same color, same design, just one has “debit” in tiny letters printed above the MC logo.

that is why we need Obama for, to stop the big banks from ripping people off
Give your answer to this question below!

no there isnt. but you can just make payments above the minimum level till its paid. it will finance at a MUCH higher rate seperately from your purchases but it still is lumped into your total statement
it depends on what your card agreement was, yeah chase sucks they had three id protectors taking money out of my account every month
There is no way Chase is just going to forget about your cash advance. Do you honestly think that you are entitled to free money just because YOU made a “mistake”. YOU made the mistake, NOT Chase. They have ZERO reason to remove a legit transaction (You got the cash remember????) Time to learn to be an adult and grow up. You messed up, YOU need to fix it by paying them back.
Always pay off your credit card every month. Now you are stuck – you see, the bank will pay off the money with the zero percent interest and low interest first. Leaving all the high interest to accumulate every month. They do this to make money — hopefully now we can get some more regulation (now that the “deregulators” who tanked our economy to enrich themselves are out).
Welcome to credit cards. You have to remember that every purchase is a loan. When you have a 0% introductory rate, they’re using that as bait to get you to load up a balance, and then *wham* they start charging interest when the introductory rate expires. The only way you would not see a finance charge after six or twelve months is by not paying attention.
As for the cash advance, the bank has special and very evil rules clearly outlined in the fine print. They charge for taking the advance in the first place, they charge a higher interest rate for money you borrow through a cash advance, and when you pay your bill the payment goes to everything *but* the cash advances first to maximize the amount of interest they get to charge you.
So, yes, you’re going to have to pay off everything else on the bill before you make a dent in the cash advance. The only way to make that happen fast is to put the card away and throw as much money as you can toward the bill.
You already told US what you need to do. You PAY OFF the balance on your card. If you actually READ the terms and conditions of the card agreement, all payments are applied first to finance charges, then to account balances in the order that MAXIMIZES future finance charges.
Edit: How is it POSSIBLE to use your credit card at an ATM and believe you used your debit card? When I use MY debit card, I have to tell the ATM to take the money from my checking account, even though it is the ONLY account linked to the card.
You should also use a different PIN for each card, that would make your ‘mistake’ impossible.
