Can a personal bankruptcy stop you from getting a corproate credit card when hired by the company?

Saturday, September 11, 2010

I am unemployed and obviously looking for a job in corporate america. I have always had a corporate card, but since leaving my last job I had to file bankruptcy. Could I be denied a card when hired by a company? Could a company fire me or not hire me because of my bankruptcy?

Absolutely! There is no way a company is going to issue a company card to someone who is in bankruptcy proceedings or who has declared bankruptcy. Also, companies can & do check credit and can deny anyone a job for failure to meet the company’s requisite credit specifications.

A personal bankruptcy can stop you from being hired by a company, that I know for sure. Strange isn’t it. If your already hired I would say no because you wouldn’t have one if it wasn’t needed to do your job and you won’t be able to do your job without it.

Depending on the card issuer, it can. Some ‘corporate’ cards require you to sign for PERSONAL liability. In such cases, you will probably not qualify. If you are not required to sign personal liability, the card issuer will probably never see your credit report and be unaware of the bankruptcy.
It is more likely the company will either not hire you, or not authorize you to carry a card for which they are liable. Bankruptcy is not a protected class in employment law. It is unlikely you will be hired in a position for which a corporate card is normally given.

Personal credit cards approval/denials are based on credit scores. Corporate credit cards may or may not be based on credit scores. Check with your HR person first.
